Novi Sad City Library

As civic assets and places of freedom and equality, libraries represent spatial incubators and strategic resources for the sustainable growth of cities and regions, empowering the community to use knowledge creatively through civic engagement.

Novi Sad City Library is the second biggest public library in Serbia, providing services for almost 370,000 people through 30 library branches and departments. It is a wide network of social cultural hubs in the city and the suburbs, also a parent library for the South-Bačka County, providing professional networking and support for 200 libraries of all types. Novi Sad is a capital of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, in the North of Serbia. Flat landscape of the city lies on the left bank of the river Danube, while above it, on the right river bank, lies Fruška gora mountain and famous Petrovaradin fortress. During the Habsburg rule, Serbs in Novi Sad waged a lively political and cultural struggle. In 1748, empress Maria Theresa issued an edict, granting Novi Sad the status of a free city. That’s when its cultural flourishing started, making Novi Sad the centre of almost all political, literary, educational and cultural life of Serbs in 19th century. That is why Novi Sad was proclaimed “the Serbian Athens”, carrying this flattery name till our days, being the Youth Capital in 2019 and the European Capital of Culture in 2022.
