I believe that libraries are not only guardians of knowledge and culture, but key players in building resilient, inclusive, and livable cities. At local, regional, and European levels, our mission is to ensure that libraries evolve into open, sustainable, and community-driven spaces where everyone, regardless of background, can access knowledge, develop skills, connect with others, and contribute to shaping a better future.

Budapest-Library

At the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library (FSZEK), with 120 years of heritage behind us and a renewed commitment ahead, we are reimagining what a public library can be. We honour tradition while embracing innovation—through digital inclusion, community-led service design, and creating welcoming, safe, accessible and sustainable spaces in the Central Library and across our 46 branches in all 23 districts of Budapest. Our slogan, Our city. Our library. Our common story. FSZEK. The Library of Budapest expresses our deep belief in partnership with the capital’s citizens. We aim to be more than a library: a pillar of a smart, caring city, a driver of opportunity, and a welcoming hub for lifelong learning, creativity, and community. Through cooperation and continuous renewal, we envision libraries as catalysts for transformation—locally in Budapest, regionally across Hungary, and as active contributors to the European library landscape.
